In Home Maternity Session, Longmont CO | Community over Competition

A few weeks ago my dear friends and colleagues, Lindsey Bartell of Lindsey Eden Photography and Twyla Ellis of Maple Hollow Photography got together here in Longmont, CO for an in home maternity session. Lindsey rented a beautiful Historic Victorian home right downtown for us to explore new space and light in our collaboration. Check it out here: Historic Victorian

Anyone who knows me knows just how much I value my photographer friends and creating with them - it’s essential for me to thrive. I love the entire experience from planning locations, wardrobe, meeting our model, getting the schedule set and of course seeing the different perspectives of each of our collections as we sift through them. There are completely different nuances we all pay individual attention to, which makes for a lovely storyline for the client in the end.

Maternity sessions can be stressful for an expecting mother for many reasons. Imagine having THREE cameras on you and THREE professionals asking you to let the veil down, to trust and to allow yourself to feel meaningful and intimate moments for others to see. Imagine each one of those professionals having a different approach to how they lean into this experience with you. Imagine the confidence and bravery it takes to allow yourself to be this vulnerable

There is an unsaid promise many of us photographers make; to value our community over the competition. When you find your colleagues, the ones whose visions align with yours, the ones you trust, the ones you can work with your unsaid promise to yourself becomes part of who you are. Your community becomes part of your business and you find as many ways as you can to include it in your day to day. You support, you lean on and you share with them and in return they do the same for you.

My point is this; it matters WHO you work with. This statement applies to not only us as professionals, but you as the client as well! To be able to work seamlessly with other humans is no easy task, so finding those people in your community is invaluable.

My clients come to me first, because they feel a connection to the work they see. They hire me because they feel a connection to me. Establishing trust from the get go is essential. My maternity sessions are very intimate. My goals are to capture the essence of my expecting mammas. I want for them to feel seen and celebrated and I want them to feel that everytime they view their imagery. Having tangible evidence of their journey into motherhood is the reminder of how their life, their body and mind has shifted into a new place; the excitement of the unexpected.

I was introduced to Marcia through Lindsey. Lindsey is her birth photographer and doula and part of Marcia’s package was a maternity session. Because Lindsey is part of my community and I know how our values and visions align, I knew I would love Marcia and working with her. Marcia, knowing how incredible Lindsey is (that’s why she hired her) felt comfortable allowing myself and Twyla into her space and allowing us to create intimate portraits of her. Marcia did have reservations about sharing images of herself in such a vulnerable state but after seeing her collection of images, this is what Marcia wrote to me:

“This has been a journey for me from posing nude to seeing pictures of myself nude to thinking about sharing them online...but all I see is beauty and grace. My body is an expression of my beautiful babe and womanhood. I love it all so much. Thank you for being along this journey with me…”
